In his Absolute Jest, John Adams has a string quartet dialogue with a symphony orchestra, taking his cue from a few Beethovenesque fragments. Here it’s paired with the Ninth Symphony. If you prick up your ears, you’ll note that this work as well concludes with flashes of lightning and scattered phrases that make sense solely within the bigger picture.
