In Stabat Mater, a mother's weeping for her dead son becomes the weeping of all mothers, of all fathers, of anyone who has lost sons, daughters, brothers, sisters, loved ones through violence. The text attributed to Jacopone da Todi thus becomes sacred music, yes, but also an invocation to participate in suffering, through which life is reborn.
