Sentire Haiti
Milano
/ 27 July 2011
Among the first lands of occupation and Western colonization, Haiti has been one of the first Nation of Americas to declare its independence and to become the first black Republic in the world (1804).
Twenty-seven thousands km2 culturally independent and, at the same time, mirror of modern and multicultural contaminations. Music has a fundamental role in haitian society where singing is often interpreted as a witness of african roots. Still today, in fact, the work of farmers, as once was the work of slaves, is animated by groups of musicians and singers, and the voodoo rite (a set of animist beliefs got in the Americas with the people of Western Africa deported by the slave drivers between the end of ‘500 and the beginning of ‘800) is entirely sung.
In this context also the bard, the troubadour, has a central position as storyteller that gives voice to the haitian community.
Culture of resistance, overlapping, melting pot, the haitian music is a mosaic exploded with the meeting of the colonialism with Africa, made of syncretism and unlikely migrations.
MITO Festival presents a cultural curved path, never ordinary, that unveils Haiti and the treasures of this land, too much often remembered for the catastrophes and too rarely for its cultural richness.
The Galleria d’Arte Moderna will host on September, 18th the presentation of the book "Musiche di Haiti” by Emmanuelle Honorin, with the participation of native musicians.
From 16th till 21st September the movie review "La terra trema” in collaboration with Milano Film Festival, will bring on the screens of MITO a series of charming looks that will narrate the culture, the rituality and its half-cast soul.
And eventually a cycle of concerts “Sentire Haiti”: Il richiamo del vudù, with Racine Mapou de Azor e l'Ensemble Erol Josué (September, 18th ); I bardi nativi, with Beken and Moonlight Benjamin (double concert of September, 19th at 5 p.m. and at 10 p.m.), La méringue with Ti-Coca and Wanga – Neges Ensemble (September, 21st).
Also the great final closing party of the 5th edition of MITO Festival has a Haitian theme: on Thursday September, 22nd the spirit and the music of the street carnival in Haiti will invade Hangar Bicocca and greet the audience of the Festival to 2012.
