This is the second park built in Milano and owes its name to the fact that it lies along the route that leads from the Duomo through the Arco della Pace to the Sempione Pass. Set beside the old Piazza d’armi, the park was designed in 1890 by architect Alemagna, featuring an irregular scheme that contrasted with the structured urban context. Since the beginning the park has hosted major public events, including the 1906 Expo, of which there remains the city’s Aquarium pavilion, designed by architect Locati in Liberty style and renovated in 2006. Alemagna’s original idea for the park was based on English prototypes, and included waterways and hillocks, such as the Monte Tordo hill, with its magnificent play on perspective that makes use of the castle and the Arco della Pace. The park has always been central to the leisure time of the Milanese and a focus of art and music.
