The origins of the Basilica of San Babila date back to the eleventh century, but it doesn’t remain practically anything of the original church because many restorations took place over the centuries. The first major renovation took place from the end of ‘500 and in the first decade of ‘600 there was no longer any memory of the old Romanesque building. The façade, the floor, the ceilings, the hall’s vaults were rebuilt, the old Romanesque capitals were covered with stucco, becoming classic elements. The condition of the church deteriorated rapidly due to a serious problem of moisture and in the early nineteenth century an urgent renovation action was necessary. After several interventions to improve aeration and drainage, from 1880 to 1906, a large new restoration of the Basilica was carried out. The cultural climate in Milan was now changed compared with the wave of modernity of the begin of the century and the Basilica was restored and completed according to its original style. With the conclusion of the front in 1906, what was then called “ rehabilitation” and “general restoration” of the building was completed. These works have in fact given to the old building an appearance that it had never had over the centuries, but it represented the typical expression of Milanese culture of the late nineteenth. In this role the church has come down to our time.
