Šostakovič wrote Trio No. 2 in 1944, as the extermination camps began to be discovered. The finale is an obsessive dance on a Jewish theme – a dance of the dead, mechanical and ghostly. Krein opens the evening, with the painful voice of the synagogue singer transfused into the European music chamber. In between, Takemitsu and his trio suspended “between Tides” and the youthful Kammersonate by Henze: a program about memory and loss.
