The only operatic event on the program, part of a diptych entirely dedicated to Charpentier: Les Arts Florissants—which gave its name to the ensemble—is an
allegory in which the personification of Discord attacks the flourishing of the arts, while Peace defends it. This is followed by La Descente d’Orphée aux Enfers, a masterpiece in which music and beauty triumph over death.
