Teatro degli Arcimboldi served as temporary home to the Teatro alla Scala for three seasons, beginning January 19, 2002, during renovation of the original theater designed by Piermarini. Construction of the Teatro degli Arcimboldi was sponsored by the City of Milano in conjunction with the Pirelli company, based on a design by Gregotti Associates International. The 2,400-seat theater is unique in all Milano for its building criteria, acoustics and visual effect. Two gallery levels are set above two floor level audience sections, while the structure of the theater comprises three main areas – foyer, hall and stage. The foyer features a large glass covering, along which balconies run. The high-tech 40-meter stage tower guarantees maximum functionality of stage and rigging spaces. The 16 m x 12 m proscenium matches the dimensions of the La Scala stage.
