Circolo Filologico Milanese, a non-profit cultural institution founded in 1872, is the oldest of its kind in Milano and Lombardia, with headquarters in a Liberty-style palazzo on via Clerici 10, in the heart of Milano’s cultural district near La Scala, il Duomo and Piazza Cordusio. More recently, activities of the “circle” range from its school of ancient and modern languages (the city’s very first foundation-based school of languages) to seminars, study groups, courses and literary awards, including the Carlo Porta Award, which has reached its 44th edition. There are also conferences and courses on photography, art exhibitions and competitions, classical and jazz concerts, activities in painting as well as publishing initiatives that promote the city’s traditional dialect. Circolo Filologico Milanese also possesses a renowned library containing over 100,000 volumes, founded in 1875 by Eugenio Torelli Viollier, who also founded Italy’s number-1 daily newspaper Corriere della Sera.
