Diminutive and bubbly, inevitably recalling a small bottle of the renowned drink he partially shares his stage name with, singer David Mettelus belts out slow méringue strains based on voodoo folk melodies. He sings of Agoué, ruler of the waves, of Erzulie, goddess of love, of Simbi, the snake spirit. His sound is tinged with a recollection of Cuban dances and the colonists and slaves of Santo Domingo.
