The Goldberg Variations were born, it is said, to cure the insomnia of a Russian count. Thirty variations on a stubborn bass: canons at increasing intervals, dances, arabesques, fugues, a finale between folk songs. Our “harmonic” journey that began with Britten's War Requiem could only end with this monument to the history of music for contrapuntal rigor and architectural perfection.
