Tribute to Henze

Shostakovich wrote his Piano Trio No. 2 in 1944, as the extermination camps were beginning to be uncovered. The finale is an obsessive dance built on a Jewish theme—a dance of the dead, mechanical and ghostly. The evening opens with Krein, whose music brings the sorrowful voice of the synagogue cantor into the world of European chamber music. Between them come Takemitsu, with his trio suspended “between the tides,” and Henze’s youthful Kammersonate: a program shaped by memory and loss.
