The traditional music of Haiti is mostly a staple of rural areas, played by amateur musicians gathered at voodoo temples. But in recent years, with support from the rasin (“roots”) movement which proposes a return to Haitians’ African origins, ancestral sounds have gone professional. ______________________ The very popular group Racine Mapou de Azor features female singers, drums, congas and rattles. Voodoo worshipers inspired by the mapou, the sacred tree of the loa spirits, sing out in praise of the roots and comment on current issues in Haiti. Author, choreographer, dancer, singer and voodoo priest Erol Josué splits his time between Port-au-Prince and New York City, performing ceremonial rituals and concerts. He creates a bridge that links tradition with modernity, mixing incantation with his own personal blend of electro-voodoo.
