Messiaen composed one of his greatest works while a prisoner at the Görlitz concentration camp. In the preface to the score, he claimed to have been inspired by the Angel of the Apocalypse, who “lifted up his hand to heaven, and swore by Him that liveth for ever and ever... that there should be time no longer.”
