Alongside two masterpieces of Viennese classicism by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart and Ludwig van Beethoven, the Santa Cecilia Academy Orchestra, conducted by Gianandrea Noseda, performs a recent composition by Jörg Widmann. The contemporary German composer, conductor and clarinetist takes inspiration from the quick movements of Beethoven’s Seventh and Eighth symphonies to recreate their “furor and rhythmic impulse” for an orchestra with identical instrumental characteristics.
