On the fiftieth anniversary of Britten’s death, MITO honors him on several occasions; here, in the most intimate way, with a chamber portrait. String Quartet No. 2 was composed in 1945 to mark the 250th anniversary of Purcell’s death, Britten’s spiritual predecessor. Its third movement is a grand chaconne over an ostinato bass, in the tradition of the English Baroque.
