The only operatic event on the program, in a diptych entirely dedicated to Charpentier: Les Arts Florissants –which gave the ensemble its name – is an allegory in which the personification of Discord attacks the flourishing of the arts and that of Peace defends it. This is followed by La Descente d'Orphée aux Enfers, a masterpiece in which music and beauty conquer death.
