Why is it that in every age, men have constructed idols, bestowing them with powers of all kinds, only to destroy them and start all over again? It’s as if life’s creative acts are born out of destruction. This reflection inspired Sidi Larbi Cherkaoui to create Icon. To express this idea, he chose to work with clay, a heavy but readily manipulated substance, like the body of a dancer, to convey a universal message of constant mutation. The stage is a battlefield where each performer fiercely focuses on the construction, defense and eventual destruction of his or her own simulacrum.
