LONGITUDES
By the early 18th century, the growing number of transoceanic crossings made more precise nautical calculations a necessity. In response, the Board of Longitude was founded in London, and promised handsome rewards for anyone able to come up with an instrument capable of accurately determining longitude. Around that time, the writing of music also underwent significant developments with the advent of bars and strokes that added precision and rationality in terms of tempo.
