LEIPZIG
Bach was Thomaskantor and Director musices in Leipzig from 1723 until his death. Mendelssohn, who served as Director of the Gewandhaus, ushered in the rediscovery of the city and helped transform it into a prestigious hub for music. And ever since, musical leadership there has been in the hands of stellar artists, including composers like Max Reger and his successor Sigfrid Karg-Elert.
