The Leçons de ténèbres by Couperin are the evidence of a distant time, that of Louis XIV. At the court of King Louis XIV there were not only dances and lavish ceremonies but also moments of deep spiritual meditation. The Leçons de ténèbres by François Couperin belongs to the latter. This music, which requires minimal organic - two voices, organ and viola da gamba - is one of the most intense religious meditations produced in the "Grand Siècle" and still manages to convey a feeling of rare depth .
