Dvořák tells of a dove that convinces a guilty woman to throw herself into the river. Smetana composed a theme for a river, symbol of the Bohemian landscape, that became a veritable theme song for open spaces. But at the start there was Beethoven, who in the scene by the stream in his Pastoral Symphony, reinvents the very idea of descriptive music.
