JOYFUL ISLANDS

In his Symphony No. 4 Mahler explores a curious celestial life. Debussy takes inspiration from a Watteau painting that depicts young people setting out for Cythera, the island of love. Qigang Chen’s piece, which exhibits the rarest tenderness, is based on a famous Chinese melody dedicated to eternal joy.
