The construction of the church of Sant’Eufemia began in 472-475 A.D., perhaps by archbishop San Senatore Settala. It was rebuilt in the 1400s and further restructured on various occasions in the centuries that followed. The current version of Basilica di Sant’Eufemia is the result of restoration efforts led by architect Enrico Terzaghi in 1870. Several years later the false Romanesque-Gothic facade was replaced by the one that may be seen today, in terracotta and stone from Vicenza. The portico with three arches features mosaics that repeat Luigi Cavenaghi’s detached frescoes. Frescoes in the interior provide testimony to what is left of the church’s early beginnings. See the Wedding of Santa Caterina by an artist from the school of Leonardo, in the first chapel on the left, and a canvas by Bernardino Bergognone in the second chapel on the left.
