The science of cantillation is governed by complex rules derived from the te’amim, or accents that provide indications for rhythm and melody. Over time, two distinct styles arose: the Sephardic (from the Hebrew Sepharad), which developed in Spain and spread throughout the Mediterranean and Middle East; and the Ashkenazic (from the Hebrew Ashkenaz), from the Franco- German area of the Rhein Valley, which spread through central and Eastern Europe. Here’s a rare opportunity to enjoy both styles.
