Cantillation, or ritual chanting of sacred texts, dates back to the origins of Judaism. The science of cantillation is governed by complex rules derived from the te’amim, or accents that provide indications for rhythm and melody. Over time, two distinct styles arose: the Sephardic (from the Hebrew Sepharad), which developed in Spain and spread throughout the Mediterranean and Middle East; and the Ashkenazic (from the Hebrew Ashkenaz), from the Franco- German area of the Rhein Valley, which spread through central and Eastern Europe. Here’s a rare opportunity to enjoy both styles.
