Piazza Duomo
The Basilica of Monza, dedicated to St. John the Baptist, is located in the city’s downtown Piazza del Duomo. Construction began in the 6th century A.D. under Teodolinda, the Longobard queen. Reconstruction in the 1300s led to the Latin cross layout we see today, along with the octagonal dome cladding and the addition of lateral chapels and the expansion of the façade featuring polychrome white and green marble. An elegant Renaissance archway was added above the main entrance. The interior was restructured in the late 1500s, with a trussed ceiling and vaults, and the choir section was lengthened. Interior design brings together the main trends in Lombard Baroque and Rococo. Of note is the neoclassical altar by Appiani, the chapel by Teodolinda with frescoes by the Zavattari artists, which houses the Ferrea crown, as well as the Duomo Museum.
