Virgilio Sieni is a leading figure in Italian choreography and dance today. He has created eleven choreographies for Bach sonatas – eleven movements that comprise the three sonatas for cello and piano by Johann Sebastian Bach. Each choreography is linked to one of the many wars that since 1994 have devastated as many world locations, an idealistic connection between stops along a modern-day via crucis through the pain of war: Sarajevo, Kigali, Srebrenica, Tel Aviv, Jenin, Baghdad, Istanbul, Beslan, Gaza, Benthala, Kabul. The eleven pieces follow one another as if they were dances, epitaphs for the sublimation of tragedy, and succeed in the realization of a difficult artistic challenge that calls for representing fear, pain and death in dance form.
