Milano’s Giuseppe Verdi Conservatory of Music was instituted in a Royal Napoleonic Decree in 1807 by Eugène de Beauharnais, Viceroy of the Kingdom of Italy, destined for location in what had formerly been a convent adjacent to the Santa Maria della Passione church. The conservatory was inaugurated on September 3, 1808, with the issuing of the institute’s original statute. Since then the Giuseppe Verdi Conservatory has become one of the world’s leading centers of musical study. Today it is part of Italy’s University System of Higher Education in the Arts and Music, under the aegis of the Department of Universities and Research. The conservatory’s student population numbers 1,700, with 243 teachers, 20 departments and 67 majors to choose from at levels 2 and 3.
To celebrate its 200th anniversary, the Giuseppe Verdi Conservatory will be hosting conferences, concerts and other musical initiatives, with local and international participation.
