Richard Samek

Richard Samek was born in Třebič. He graduated from the Janaček Academy of Music and Performing Arts in Brno, where he studied opera performance under Professor Anna Barova. After completing his studies, he studied privately with Natalie Romanova.

He is a laureate of several international competitions, for instance the Antonin Dvořak International Vocal Competition, and the M. S. Trnavsky vocal competition./n /n In 2006, he made his debut at the stage of the National Theatre in Brno starring as Faust in A. Boito’s Mefistofeles. In the following years he performed in many roles - Pierre Bezukhov (S. Prokofiev, War and Peace), Ismaele (G. Verdi, Nabucco), Barinkay (J. Strauss, The Gipsy Baron), Alfred (J. Strauss, The Bat) and the Prince (Rusalka, A. Dvořak).

At present he is a member of the National Theatre in Prague, and performs as Rodolfo (G. Puccini, La Boheme), Ismaele (G. Verdi, Nabucco), Cassio (G. Verdi, Otello), the Prince (A. Dvořak, Rusalka), Belmonte (W. A. Mozart, The Abduction from the Seraglio), Tamino (W. A. Mozart, the Magic Flute) and Ladislaus (B. Smetana, The Two Widows).

From 2007 till 2012, he was in permanent engagement with the J. K. Tyl Theatre in Pilsen where he sung as the Duke of Mantua (G. Verdi, Rigoletto), Jenik (B. Smetana, The Bartered Bride), Tamino (W. A. Mozart, The Magic Flute), Nemorino (G. Donizetti, The Elixir of Love) Vit (B. Smetana, The Secret) and the role of Doctor Faust (Ch. Gounod, Faust). In 2011 and 2012 he gave guest performances as Števa (L. Janaček, Jenufa /Her Stepdaughter/) in the French production in theatres in Rennes, Limoges and Reims. 

Since 2010 he also has been a permanent guest in the Staatsoperette Dresden. He played there the part of Barinkay (J. Strauss, The Gipsy Baron), Graf von Luxemburg (F. Lehar, Der Graf von Luxemburg /The Count of Luxembourg/) and the Duke of Urbino (J. Strauss II., Eine Nacht in Venedig /A Night in Venice/). 

Richard Samek cooperates with leading chamber and symphonic orchestras – Slovak Philharmonic, Czech Philharmonic, Brno Philharmonic, Chamber Philharmonic Orchestra of South Bohemia, Prague Philharmonia, Prague Symphony Orchestra and Tokyo Metropolitan Symphony Orchestra. 

He has been singing under the baton of many famous conductors - J. Bělohlavek, T. Brauner, E. Dovico, F. Drs, P. Ch. Feigel, P. Feranec, H. M. Forster, Ch. Garbosnik, R. Hein, J. Hrůša, R. Jindra, J. Klecker, J. Kyzlink, A. Markovič, Z. Muller, T. Netopil, O. Olos, I. Pařik, J. Petrdlik, L. Svarovsky, P. Šnajdr, D. Švec, J. Štrunc, J. Štych, E. Theis, R. Valek, K. Zehnder. 

He has been performing in productions of various famous directors - R. Alfoldi D. Balatka, Z. Brabec, J. Burian, P. Constant, O. Havelka, J. Heřman, M. Huba, B. Hončarivova, J. Kališova, J. Korčak, O. Křiž, V. Malek, V. Moravek, A. Nekovar, J. Novak, M. Oldag, M. Otava, R. Schaller, L. Štros, J. Štych jr., Z. Troška,V. Věžnik. 

Richard Samek also regularly cooperates with many significant international music festivals – Dvořak Prague, Spilberg Festival, Znojmo Music Festival, Janaček Hukvaldy, Moravian Autumn, Prague Spring, Smetana‘s Litomyšl Festival, St. Wenceslas Music Festival, Třebičsky operni festival (Trebic Opera Festival) and many others.
