Sidi Larbi Cherkaoui’s Sutra, featuring the monks of the Shaolin Temple in China, premiered in 2008 and has since achieved cult status. With this piece, the Belgium-born artist with Flemish and Moroccan roots may have reached a high point in his personal blend of Eastern philosophy and Western thought. The encounter celebrated in Sutra combines Western contemporary dance with kung fu, for a super energized performance that comes off as highly rational in the choreography’s geometric lines, revealing all the grace, beauty, rigor and sheer power of the martial arts discipline.
