NATURAL, SPIRITUAL

Aquilino Coppini, an intellectual in the service of Cardinal Borromeo, was a keen admirer of Monteverdi’s madrigals. Secular though they were. But when proposing them to the ecclesiastic circles of his day, he replaced the original verses with religious poetry. Today, thanks to recent research, we can hear how waves, birds, and streams transform into devotional expressions.
